First Announcement (February 5, 2016)

1) BACKGROUND

The Carpatho-Balkan-Dinaric Geomorphological Commission (CBDGC) was established in 1963 at the joint symposium ‘Geomorphology of the Carpathians’ held in Košice and Bratislava. From the very beginning its main objective was to establish a platform for the exchange of geomorphological knowledge and experience in studying the Carpathian mountain system and adjacent basins. Since then, the Commission has played an important role in joining geomorphologists and other researchers from the area and elsewhere in many joint projects, from organizing scientific meetings and preparing books and maps to publishing the journal Studia Geomorphologica Carpatho-Balcanica (since 1967). Over time, the Commission’s activities expanded to the Balkan and Dinaric mountain systems and from original member countries (Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria) to neighboring and newly established countries of the region. At the last meeting of the CBDGC in Stará Lesná (Slovakia) from June 25 to 29, 2013, twelve member countries participated (Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia).

From the 6th International Conference on Geomorphology in 2005 in Zaragoza, Spain, to 2012, the Commission was formally functioning as the Carpatho-Balkan-Dinaric Regional working group (CBDRWG) of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG). After finishing two mandates as the working group, at the conference in Stará Lesná, the CBDGC was reestablished as an independent regional geomorphological platform with the main objective as introduced by its ‘founding fathers’ in 1963.

2) ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The conference will be held from Tuesday, 13 September, to Saturday, 17 September 2016, in the Postojna Cultural Centre (Gregorčičev drevored 2; coordinates: 45 46 30.05N 14 12 53.85E), located in the city centre close to the Karst Research Institute ZRC SAZU (Titov trg 2; coordinates: 45 46 31.35N 14 12 46.40E) and all other facilities. We would like to have the conference as the continuation of the CBDGC’s efforts for enhancing scientific cooperation and exchange of research results across the whole spectrum of geomorphological fields.

It is a pleasure for the organizing committee to invite all geomorphologists from the Carpatho-Balkan-Dinaric region and surroundings to participate at the conference and to present the results of geomorphological research in this study area. We would like to hold a scientific meeting in a pleasant and friendly atmosphere, appropriate for open and vigorous exchange of knowledge and latest results in Postojna, one of the world’s centres of karst research. It is situated in the northwestern part of Dinaric Karst, not far from Adriatic Sea and very easily accessible by all means of transportation.

We are inviting all the geomorphologists and other researchers who are dealing with the geomorphology of Carpatho-Balkan-Dinaric region and its surroundings to present their newest research results at the conference in Postojna. The programme is open to the whole range of geomorphological themes with the emphasis on the Carpatho-Balkan-Dinaric region. However, presentations of new advances in methodological and theoretical approaches in geomorphology are welcome regardless the region of origin. As this is the first conference of CBDGC in the Classical Karst area, we would like to add some karstic flavour to the conference, so the presentations of this subject are especially welcome.

The conference is prepared under the auspices of the CBDGC.
